Plot summary
The story begins from Keith Clayton’s point of view. Keith is a local police officer who is at a place where college students often swim without clothes. He carries a camera borrowed from the Police Department and takes pictures of three female college students. One of the students leaves the beach and finds Keith, who is supposed to be on duty. Keith hides the camera and talks to the girls about breaking the law by swimming without clothes. He lets them go. Later, Keith sees a man described as looking like a hippie walking on a logging road near the beach with a dog. The man is Logan Thibault and his dog, Zeus. Keith worries Logan might have seen him taking the pictures and tries to find a way to arrest Logan. However, after checking Logan’s background and Logan refusing to let Keith search his bags, Keith lets him go. Keith asks Logan where he is going, and Logan says he is heading to Arden. Keith returns to find his hidden camera, but it is gone, and the tires on his police car are slashed. Keith becomes worried because his father is the local sheriff and his grandfather is a local judge.
When the story shifts to Logan’s perspective, he is in a car with the three college girls who picked him up after he asked for a ride. Logan gives the camera (from which he removed the memory disk) to the girls. The story then goes back to show that Logan saw Keith taking the pictures and took the camera, destroyed the memory disk, and slashed the tires of Keith’s car. The story also looks back at Logan’s life, including his journey from Colorado and his decision to join the Marines. It explains how Logan started playing poker during rising tensions in the Middle East as a way to cope. He lost all his money and stopped playing. Later, while in the Middle East, Logan went for a morning run and found a picture half-buried in the sand. The picture shows a woman wearing a shirt that says "Lucky Lady." Logan’s luck begins to change after this. His friend, Victor, encourages him to join a poker game and believes in omens and superstitions. Victor slowly convinces Logan that the picture and the woman in it have special meaning for him.
Elizabeth, also known as Beth, is introduced at a birthday party for her son, Ben. It is revealed that Beth’s grandmother, Nana, recently had a stroke and Beth has been helping run Nana’s dog kennel and obedience school. Nana raised Beth after Beth’s parents died in a car accident when she was 3 years old. Beth is also a teacher at a local school. It becomes clear that Keith Clayton is Beth’s ex-husband and Ben’s father. Beth expresses frustration about Keith’s disappointment in Ben, who is not as athletic as other boys his age. Ben does not like spending time with Keith and seems to dislike him.
The story returns to Logan’s time in the Middle East, where two of his comrades in his fire team were killed by a rocket-propelled grenade, and Logan survived. He stays at a motel and decides to find the fairgrounds where the picture of Beth was taken. He locates the exact spot and plans to visit a pool hall/bar to ask locals if they know the girl in the picture.
Keith reflects on his day and explains the slashed tires to his father. It is clear that his father and grandfather are well-known in town, and Keith feels caught between avoiding trouble and relying on his family’s influence to avoid consequences. Keith also expresses his dislike for Ben’s weaknesses and his desire to find Logan to make him pay for what happened. Keith receives a call from a coworker, Tony, who says a stranger at a local pool hall has a picture of Beth and is asking about her. Keith asks if the man looks like Logan, but Tony says the description does not match. Keith is disappointed and decides not to act.
Logan’s version of the pool hall encounter is described, and he learns Beth’s full name. The next day, Logan visits the dog kennel and meets Beth for the first time. He applies for a job and tells her a half-truth about why he came to Hampton. Beth becomes suspicious and has Nana talk to Logan. Nana hires Logan but says she feels he is hiding something. After being hired, Logan finds a place to rent and begins working at the kennel. Over time, Logan and Zeus grow closer to Nana, Beth, and Ben.
Nana goes on a trip to visit her sister in Greensboro, leaving Beth and Logan to care for the kennel. Beth and Logan get to know each other better, and one weekend, Ben spends time with Keith. Logan and Beth make ice cream on a Saturday night when Ben is gone. When Keith returns with Ben, Ben has a bruise on his face and broken glasses. Keith tells Ben to blame someone else, but it is clear Keith threw a baseball too hard and hit Ben. Keith does not notice Logan at first but demands to know why he is there. Zeus becomes defensive, and Logan tells Keith to leave. Keith is upset and worried that Logan might still have the camera’s memory disk.
Beth and Logan go on a date, and Logan shares stories about Victor and a boating trip in Minnesota. Logan tells Beth that Victor died in an accident. Beth and Logan continue dating, and Keith breaks into Logan’s home to search for the photo disk. Logan tells Beth that Keith may have caused the end of her past relationships and shares details about the break-in. Nana agrees with Logan. Beth visits a former boyfriend, who weakly suggests Keith may have been involved in their breakup. Beth politely confronts Keith, but Keith tries to convince her that Logan is dangerous. Logan researches Keith’s family and confronts Keith at his home, bluffing that he has a video of the break-in. Logan threatens to share the information with Keith’s family if Keith continues to interfere with Beth. Keith realizes he is losing control and begins drinking heavily.
Later, a storm hits Hampton, causing heavy rain and flooding. Ben convinces Logan to visit his tree house, but Logan realizes it is unsafe due to the flooding. They still go inside, and Logan gives Ben the picture, believing it will protect him. Logan mentions Victor’s belief in the picture’s luck. Logan also plays the piano in church for Nana, and the town begins to admire him. Even Keith’s grandfather praises Ben, which increases Keith’s hatred of Logan.
Tony, the coworker who called Keith, is mentioned in the story.
Author's comments
The book explores the themes of fate that seems difficult to change and destiny. Although the story includes references to these ideas, the author, Sparks, said he does not believe in them completely. He explained that he believes people can affect the future in ways that appear to be coincidences. When this happens, the feeling of fate or destiny becomes more noticeable. Sparks added that when he wrote The Lucky One, his goal was to examine the idea of fate or destiny in a way that shows how the real world works.
