Career
She published her first novel, A Handful of Heaven, in 1991.
In the 2000s, Hannah changed her writing style from romance stories to stories about women's lives, combining emotional stories with tales that include several generations of a family. Her most famous book, Firefly Lane (2008), follows a long-lasting friendship between two women. The book became a bestseller and helped her reach more readers. Its popularity increased when Netflix made a TV series based on it in 2021.
Another important book was Winter Garden (2010), which tells a modern family story and includes a historical part set during the Siege of Leningrad. Critics praised the book for its deep emotions and how it showed the relationship between mothers and daughters. A reviewer in The Seattle Times said Hannah could move between different time periods and create a story that "tells a powerful, heartbreaking story with a beautiful ending."
Critics also note her care in describing historical events. Michelle Rayburn said Hannah "combines heartwarming stories with history in her novels."
