Reception

Dan LeRoy of AllMusic looked back on the album and said that Richard Jobson made a record that was better than Big Country and most other bands with loud guitars at that time, except for U2. He called the album powerful and full of strong, memorable songs.

Jeffrey X. Martin of Popshifter wrote a positive review when the album was released again in 2013 as a two-disc set. He described the music as dramatic but not over the top, and compared it to stories from Arthurian legends with strong national pride. He said the songs felt so powerful that they seemed to rise from a lake, carrying the sword Excalibur.

Track listing

The 2-disc reissue does not include all of The Armoury Show's songs. Two of their three popular songs that charted are missing: the original version of "Castles In Spain" made by Nick Tauber and the main side of the single "Love in Anger." Also missing is "Uptown Downtown," which was on the 12-inch single of "Love in Anger," and an early version of "A Feeling" that was on the 12-inch single of "We Can Be Brave Again."
