Plot
Hope Anderson is a 36-year-old trauma nurse who was attending her friend's wedding at Sunset Beach, North Carolina. She was having a hard time because her father had recently been told he had ALS. Meanwhile, Tru Wall, a 42-year-old safari guide from Zimbabwe, was visiting the United States on a trip. One day, Tru and Hope met and began to feel a slight interest in each other.
Reception
Reviewers said that fans of Sparks would enjoy Every Breath. Deccan Herald's Chethana Dinesh noted that the novel includes elements fans typically expect from Sparks's work, such as "lots of love, hope, and dreams, a little sadness, and many tears." However, she mentioned that the book was "not as powerful as his earlier novels, especially The Notebook, A Walk to Remember, Nights in Rodanthe, and Two by Two."
USA Today's Jocelyn McClurg agreed, saying she felt "a little emotional" just from reading the names "Tru Walls" and "Hope Anderson."
Publishers Weekly stated that the main characters felt "similar or the same," but added that the story's setting helped make their experiences more interesting.
Several reviewers were impressed by the story's inspiration from a mailbox called the Kindred Spirit, "where people have left love letters for many years for others to read and share."
