A romantic thriller is a type of story that mixes elements from the romance and thriller genres. These stories aim to entertain by creating feelings of unease through suspenseful moments and raising emotions like worry and fear. While the idea of a thriller is more familiar, it often combines parts of different genres.
Thrillers can be found in many types of stories, such as comedy, melodrama, adventure, and romance. All thrillers usually mix different genres together. The suspense that defines thrillers works best with certain genres, like crime, science fiction, and romance, because these allow for more tension than genres like screwball comedies or musicals.
A romantic thriller combines the romance and thriller genres, making it different from other movie styles like Gothic horror or Golden Age detective films. This genre works on two levels: 1) a main theme is created, and 2) relationships, patterns, and how the story is built are connected to this theme. This setup allows for many different ways to tell the story and use visual styles in romantic thrillers.
History
In Northrop Frye's Anatomy of Criticism (1957), he introduced four basic categories in literature: comedy, romance, tragedy, and irony or satire. In a romance, the main character is shown as only slightly better than others, able to perform amazing feats in a world where the usual rules of nature are not always followed.
A major part of a romantic story is adventure, often involving a journey where the hero faces obstacles or dangerous creatures. These stories usually include two different worlds: the everyday world and a mysterious, unknown place. The idea of a maze is often used in romantic thrillers, representing a journey filled with confusing paths, hidden dangers, and difficult choices that make finding the solution hard.
In the 1935 book The Thirty-Nine Steps, the main character, Richard Hannay, leaves a theater with a mysterious and attractive woman. They begin a romantic adventure involving spies, secret agents, and espionage. John Buchan, the author, helped create the spy thriller genre by combining romance and adventure with political conflicts. In Alfred Hitchcock’s movie version, the possibility of a romantic relationship between the woman and the man was not as important as the main story of secret plots.
Based on Raymond Chandler’s first detective novel, The Big Sleep (1946), which stars Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, and Martha Vickers, the film shows two important parts of a romantic thriller: adventure and two different worlds. The main characters work together to save Bacall’s younger sister, played by Vickers. The story centers on a detective’s investigation, with characters working together and separately. A common theme in this genre is that the characters come from different social classes, which usually stops them from being together. Their romance seems impossible, but as the adventure continues, their relationship faces challenges and lies, eventually overcoming distrust. The story follows a private detective hired by a rich family to solve a complex case involving murder and blackmail, while possibly falling in love. Chandler’s character, Marlowe, is often described as a "knight in dark armor rescuing a lady."
Film versions of Chandler’s books have changed over time, with different directors and producers focusing on different aspects of the character, similar to how James Bond has been portrayed in many films. Marlowe has quick, playful conversations with sexual tension, while Bond uses more physical ways to attract others.
In the 2020s, romantic thrillers have become popular again, especially through Netflix movies like Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2022), starring Emma Corrin, and Dark Desire (2020), starring Maite Perroni. Other popular Netflix titles include Obsession, 365 Days, Elite, and You. Non-Netflix romantic thrillers, such as Tooth Pari: When Love Bites (2023) and Love Lies Bleeding (2024), continue to explore this genre.
