Taylor Swift, an American singer and songwriter, has written or co-written all the songs in her twelve-album collection, except for some cover songs and songs featuring other artists. She has also written songs for movies, standalone singles, and songs recorded by other musicians.
In 2005, Swift signed a publishing deal with Sony/ATV Tree Music Publishing to begin her career as a professional songwriter. That same year, she joined Big Machine Records, a record label that released her first six studio albums until her contract ended in 2018. During her early career, she often worked with Liz Rose, who co-wrote songs for her albums Taylor Swift (2006), Fearless (2008), and Red (2012). Swift wrote most of the songs on Fearless and Red by herself, and she composed all the songs on her third album, Speak Now (2010). These four albums were promoted on country radio and included elements of pop and rock music. Some songs on Red also had influences from electronic and hip-hop styles. She shifted her music style toward pop with her fifth album, 1989 (2014), which included collaborations with Jack Antonoff, Max Martin, and Shellback. These three writers worked with her again on her sixth album, Reputation (2017).
In 2018, Swift signed with Republic Records and has worked with Antonoff on every album she has released since then. Her first album with Republic, Lover (2019), is a pop album that includes collaborations with Ryan Tedder, Joel Little, Louis Bell, and Frank Dukes. In 2020, she signed a new publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group and released two albums, Folklore and Evermore, which both have an indie folk style. These albums include songs written with Aaron Dessner, who later worked with Swift on Midnights (2022) and The Tortured Poets Department (2024), both of which have a synth-pop sound. Swift’s former boyfriend, Joe Alwyn, co-wrote some songs with her for Folklore, Evermore, and Midnights. For her twelfth album, The Life of a Showgirl (2025), she co-wrote and co-produced all the songs with Martin and Shellback.
Swift’s departure from Big Machine Records led to a public disagreement about the ownership of her first six albums in 2019. To take control of these recordings, she re-recorded them. From 2021 to 2023, she released four re-recorded albums: Fearless (Taylor’s Version), Red (Taylor’s Version), Speak Now (Taylor’s Version), and 1989 (Taylor’s Version). Each of these albums includes songs she wrote but did not originally release.
