This list shows LGBTQ characters in modern books and stories. It includes important characters who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, pansexual, asexual, non-binary, or intersex. Each character must have reliable sources from other people or organizations that talk about their sexual orientation or gender identity. More details are added if needed. Only important or significant characters from each story (even if the story has many LGBTQ characters) are included here. Names are listed in order of their last names. If a character doesn't have a last name, they are listed by their first name. If a story has more than two characters listed, the last name of the first character is used for that entry.
Scope
Since the mid-1800s, many different systems have been used to describe sexual orientation and gender identity. Scholars have sometimes used different definitions or have not defined these terms clearly. Because of this, people may be described in different ways today than they were in the past.
