The red thread of fate, also called the red thread of marriage or the invisible string idea, is a belief from Chinese culture that comes from Taoism. People believe this invisible red thread connects two people who are meant to meet in a specific situation, often described as their "one true love." In Taoism, the god responsible for the red thread is named Yuè Xià Lǎorén, or Yuè Lǎo for short. He is known as the old lunar matchmaker god and is in charge of helping people find marriage partners.

In Taoism, the god responsible for the red thread is named Yuè Xià Lǎorén, or Yuè Lǎo for short. He is known as the old lunar matchmaker god and is in charge of helping people find marriage partners.

Although Yuè Lǎo is an important figure in Taoism, the idea of the red thread has been used in other cultures outside of China. In the original Chinese story, the thread is tied around both people’s ankles. However, in Japanese culture, it is tied from a man’s thumb to a woman’s little finger. Today, both cultures often show the thread tied around the little fingers of the people connected by it. In Chinese culture, the color red represents happiness and is a key part of wedding traditions.

The red thread connects two people who are meant to be together, no matter where they are, when they meet, or what happens. This magical thread may stretch or tangle, but it never breaks. This belief is similar to the Western idea of twin flames or a destined partner.

Folklore

A story about the red thread of fate tells of a young boy. One night, while walking home, the boy sees an old man named Yue Lao standing under the moonlight. Yue Lao explains to the boy that he is connected to his future wife by a red thread. Yue Lao shows the boy a young girl who is destined to be his wife. The boy, who is not interested in marriage, throws a rock at the girl and runs away.

Years later, the boy becomes a young man. His parents arrange a wedding for him. On the wedding night, his wife waits in their bedroom, wearing a traditional veil. When she lifts the veil, the man is surprised to see that she is one of the most beautiful women in the village. However, she has a decorative piece on her eyebrow. He asks her about it, and she explains that as a young girl, a boy once threw a rock at her, causing a scar on her eyebrow. She wears the decoration to hide the scar. The woman is the same girl Yue Lao showed the boy years earlier, proving that they were connected by the red thread of fate.

Another version of the story involves a young man who asks Yue Lao about his future wife. The man believes he will marry a wealthy girl. Yue Lao points to a poor little girl walking with an old blind woman in a marketplace and shows the man a red thread connecting them. The man is unhappy and tells a servant to harm the girl and the woman, then leaves the village.

Years later, the man becomes a successful public officer and marries a wealthy woman who seems perfect. However, she has a limp and covers her forehead with a silk patch. When he asks about it, she cries and explains that she is the niece of her family’s leaders. Her parents died when she was young, and she lived with her blind nanny. One day, a madman attacked her nanny in the marketplace, injuring her and leaving her scarred and disabled. The man realizes Yue Lao was correct, confesses he ordered the attack, and asks for forgiveness, which she gives.

In another story, a girl loves a boy and tells him she is in love. The boy rejects her and teases her. She runs to a fountain, where she meets Yue Lao, who tells her they are soulmates. She is still angry and leaves. Later, as a lady, she meets a charming young man who seems familiar. When she asks his name, he says it is the same as the boy who rejected her. She does not recognize him, but on their special day, he tells her about a girl who once loved him but was treated poorly. He then reveals the girl’s name, which matches hers. She realizes he is the boy from her past and forgives him.
