Composition and background

The song was written by Bert Kaempfert, with words by Milt Gabler, and made by Lee Gillette. The trumpet solo was played by Bobby Bryant. Before this, the song was part of an instrumental piece on Kaempfert's album Blue Midnight from 1964.

For international versions of his L-O-V-E album, Nat King Cole also recorded "L-O-V-E" and other songs in Japanese (with some English words), Italian, German, Spanish, and French. In French, the song was given a new name, Je Ne Repartirai Pas, and translated by Jean Delleme.

Joss Stone version

English singer Joss Stone recorded a version of the song "L-O-V-E" for the soundtrack of a commercial for Chanel's Coco Mademoiselle fragrance. The advertisement, which featured Keira Knightley and was directed by Joe Wright, was first shown on September 24, 2007, on the television networks E!, Bravo, and VH1.

Stone's version of the song was made available online on September 18, 2007. It reached number 100 on the UK singles chart and number 75 on the Swiss Hitparade. The song was later added as a bonus track to the deluxe edition of her third studio album, Introducing Joss Stone (2007), and also included on her compilation album The Best of Joss Stone 2003–2009 (2011).

Stone performed a duet of the song with Natalie Cole at Frosted Pink, a benefit concert to raise awareness of women's cancer. The event occurred at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, on October 6, 2007, and was broadcast on ABC on October 14.

Yōko Oginome version
