Clueless is a 1995 American film about growing up, written and directed by Amy Heckerling. The movie stars Alicia Silverstone and was produced by Scott Rudin and Robert Lawrence. It is loosely based on Jane Austen’s 1815 novel Emma. The story follows a wealthy, popular high school student who tries to do kind things. She befriends a new student, helps her change her appearance, and tries to match her teachers with each other while learning about her own life.
Filming happened in Southern California over 40 days. To show real 1990s teenage life, Heckerling watched students at Beverly Hills High School and used modern language in the movie’s dialogue.
Paramount Pictures released the film on July 19, 1995. It earned $88 million worldwide, even though it cost $12 million to make. The movie was very successful when sold on video. Critics gave it good reviews, and many people consider it one of the best teen films ever made. Clueless became popular among fans and has had a lasting influence on culture. It inspired a TV show and books. In 2025, the Library of Congress added the film to the United States National Film Registry because it is “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”
Plot
Cher Horowitz is a teenage girl who lives in a large house in Beverly Hills with her father, Mel, a strict lawyer. Her mother passed away when Cher was very young during a medical procedure. Cher goes to Bronson Alcott High School, where she is friends with Dionne Davenport, another wealthy student. Dionne is in a long-term relationship with Murray Duvall, a popular student. Cher believes Dionne should date older, more mature men. Josh Lucas, the son of Mel’s former wife, visits Cher and her father during a break from college. When Cher reminds Mel they are no longer married, Mel explains he divorced his wife, not his stepson. Cher teases Josh about his strong beliefs, while Josh jokes about Cher’s focus on appearance and self-centered behavior.
At first, Cher receives low grades on her report card. She convinces some teachers to change her grades, but not Mr. Hall, who is strict. To help Mr. Hall, Cher arranges a romantic relationship between him and Miss Geist, a shy teacher. After they become happy, Mr. Hall is more lenient, allowing Cher to improve her grades. Cher becomes excited about doing good things. Her father says he is proud of her ability to negotiate, even though she did not earn the grades herself.
When a new student named Tai Frasier, who is unsure about how to fit in, joins the school, Cher decides to help her. Cher and Dionne give Tai a makeover, helping her gain confidence. When Travis Birkenstock, a friendly but clumsy skateboarder, becomes interested in Tai, Cher tries to stop their relationship, believing Travis is not suitable. Instead, Cher encourages Tai to date Elton Tiscia, a popular student. However, Elton is not interested in Tai and instead tries to kiss Cher after a party. When Cher refuses, Elton leaves her in a parking lot, and she is later robbed. With no money, Cher calls Josh for help. Josh notices Cher’s efforts to help Tai and volunteer for charities, realizing she is kind despite her focus on appearance.
Christian Stovitz, a stylish new student, catches Cher’s attention. When Cher goes to a party with him, Josh attends to protect her. At the party, Josh helps Tai by asking her to dance. Later, Cher invites Christian to watch a movie at her home, but Christian is distracted by the actors in the film and ignores her advances. After learning Christian is gay, Cher continues to be friends with him, appreciating his style and art interests.
Cher’s life becomes more difficult when Tai’s popularity causes tension between them. Cher also fails her driving test for the first time, unable to change the result. Her mood worsens when Tai tells Cher she loves Josh and asks for her help in pursuing him. Jealous but unaware of her feelings, Cher tells Tai she is not right for Josh, leading to a fight between them.
Feeling confused about her life, Cher starts helping her father with legal work and spends time with Josh. She realizes she is in love with Josh. After this discovery, Cher works to live a more meaningful life, including leading a disaster relief group at school. She accepts an invitation to a skating tournament with Travis, where she reconciles with Tai, who is now dating Travis.
Eventually, Cher and Josh admit their feelings for each other and share a kiss. Later, Cher attends the wedding of Mr. Hall and Miss Geist, where she and Josh are a couple. Dionne, Murray, Tai, and Travis also attend the wedding. Cher catches the wedding bouquet and kisses Josh.
Production
The idea for Clueless first began as a television pilot in 1993. Writer and director Amy Heckerling explained that Twentieth Century Fox wanted a show about teenagers, but not the ones who were shy or unpopular. They wanted a story about the popular, confident students. Heckerling remembered that her most successful character was Jeff Spicoli from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. People thought his success came from being a surfer and often high, but Heckerling believed it was because he was optimistic and cheerful. She decided to create a character like that, and that character became Cher.
Heckerling had read Jane Austen’s novel Emma in college and admired the title character’s positivity. She thought about how to place a character who always sees the world in a hopeful way in a modern setting. She imagined taking the world of Emma, which was set in the 1800s, and moving it to Beverly Hills. She also compared Emma to old TV shows like Gidget, which she felt had a simple, relatable charm. She chose Beverly Hills as the setting because it was a bright, colorful place that felt like a fantasy version of the real world.
To learn more about student life, Heckerling visited classes at Beverly Hills High School. She noticed how much time students spent on grooming and appearance. Her agent, Ken Stovitz, read the script and suggested it could work as a movie instead of a TV show. The script, originally called No Worries, included the main characters who would appear in the Clueless film.
However, some film executives at Fox were worried the story focused too much on girls and might not attract enough viewers. They suggested adding more male characters to the story. After this feedback, the script was put on hold. Six months later, the script reached producer Scott Rudin, who supported the idea. His backing led to a competition between studios for the rights to make the film, which was eventually won by Paramount Pictures. Heckerling was excited because Paramount’s parent company, Viacom, owned TV channels like MTV and Nickelodeon, which were popular with young audiences.
Heckerling first saw Alicia Silverstone in a music video and thought of her for the role of Cher. When the film was still being developed at Fox, other actresses like Alicia Witt, Keri Russell, and Gwyneth Paltrow were considered. Heckerling met with Reese Witherspoon, who had already acted in films. Though Silverstone had only one film role at the time, the studio did not push her to cast famous actors, and Silverstone was chosen for the role of Cher.
Many actors tried out for the role of Josh, including David Kriegel, Adam Trese, and Jason Bateman. Others who auditioned for the role included Ben Affleck and Zach Braff. Some actors, like Matt Damon and Jared Leto, did not want the part.
Sarah Michelle Gellar was offered the role of Amber but turned it down because of her work on a TV show. Zooey Deschanel also tried out for the role. Lauryn Hill and Trina McGee Davis were considered for the role of Dionne. Other actors who auditioned for smaller roles included A.J. Langer and Alanna Ubach.
Johnny Galecki and Seth Green were among those who tried out for the role of Travis. Terrence Howard and Larenz Tate were considered for the role of Murray. Jamie Walters and Jonathan Brandis were finalists for the role of Christian.
Jerry Orbach and Harvey Keitel were considered for the role of Cher’s father, Melvin Horowitz. The character of Wendell Hall, played by Wallace Shawn, was inspired by a real-life teacher at Beverly Hills High School. Before acting, Shawn had been a teacher and used his experience to portray the character.
Principal photography for the film started on November 21, 1994, and lasted 40 days. Brittany Murphy, who was 17 at the time, needed a parent or guardian present during filming.
Scenes showing the fictional Bronson Alcott High School, including the tennis courts and outdoor cafeteria, were filmed at Occidental College in Los Angeles. The interior of the school was shot at Ulysses S. Grant High School in Valley Glen. Other filming locations included the former Westside Pavilion shopping mall, Circus Liquor in North Hollywood, and Rodeo Drive.
A performance by The Mighty Mighty Bosstones was moved indoors because of rain. After filming ended, Paul Rudd bought gifts for the cast.
Mona May designed the costumes for the film. The iconic plaid outfit worn by Cher was inspired by a Catholic school uniform but made more stylish. Cher wore clothes from designers like Azzedine Alaïa and Anna Sui. A Calvin Klein dress worn by Cher was actually designed by Anna Sui, who was just starting her career. Calvin Klein was credited for the film because his name was more well-known at the time.
Release
The film was aimed at young people and heavily promoted on MTV. It became an unexpected success in 1995. Clueless opened in 1,653 theaters on July 19, 1995, and earned $10,612,443 during its first weekend, ranking second at the U.S. box office behind Apollo 13. The film earned $56,631,572 in the United States and Canada during its theatrical run, making it the 32nd-highest-grossing film of 1995. Internationally, it earned $31 million, for a total worldwide earnings of $88 million. Its success helped make Alicia Silverstone, who was not widely known before, famous worldwide. She signed a $10 million, multi-picture deal with Columbia TriStar. The film gained a strong fan base after its release.
Critics praised the film. On the review website Rotten Tomatoes, it has an 82% approval rating based on 127 critics, with an average score of 6.9/10. The site’s summary states, “A funny and clever version of Emma, Clueless offers a gentle satire that mocks both teen films and the wealthy lifestyle of Beverly Hills.” On Metacritic, the film has a score of 73 out of 100 based on 20 reviews, which means “generally favorable” reviews. Audiences who saw the film gave it an average grade of “B+” on a scale from A+ to F.
Roger Ebert of the Chicago Sun-Times gave the film three-and-a-half stars out of four. Janet Maslin of The New York Times wrote, “Even if Clueless loses momentum toward the end, most of it is as eye-catching and cheerful as its star.” Peter Travers of Rolling Stone compared it to a more serious film about teenagers, Kids, saying, “The materialism in Clueless is almost as scary as the hopelessness in Kids,” but concluded that Clueless is “wicked good fun to be had [and] Silverstone is a winner.”
Clueless won the award for Best Screenplay at the National Society of Film Critics Awards. Alicia Silverstone won the Breakthrough Performance award from the National Board of Review. The film was nominated for a WGA Award for Best Screenplay. It was also nominated for four MTV Movie Awards, winning for Best Female Performance and Most Desirable Female for Silverstone. Silverstone also won the Funniest Actress in a Motion Picture award at the American Comedy Awards.
In 2008, Entertainment Weekly named Clueless one of its “New Classics,” a list of 100 best films from 1983 to 2008, ranking it 42nd. That year, the publication also listed it as the 19th-best comedy of the past 25 years. The film is ranked number 7 on Entertainment Weekly’s list of the 50 best high school films.
The City of Beverly Hills has celebrated its connection to the film. On July 19, 2025, the city held an outdoor screening to mark the film’s 30th anniversary. The event took place at La Cienega Park and was organized with Street Food Cinema. It was well attended. At the event, Beverly Hills Mayor Sharona Nazarian officially named July 19 “Clueless Day.”
Comparison toEmma
Clueless is a movie based on Jane Austen's 1815 book Emma. Many characters in the movie have similar roles in the book.
- Cher Horowitz/Emma Woodhouse: Cher is like Emma, the main character. Both are energetic, free-spirited, and enjoy helping others find love. They try to match people, such as when Cher pairs Miss Geist and Mr. Hall. This is more clear when Cher tries to match her friend Tai. Both Cher and Emma do not fully understand the effects of their actions or their feelings for Josh/Mr. Knightley until Tai/Harriet asks them to help her get together with Josh/Mr. Knightley.
- Josh Lucas/Mr. Knightley: Josh is Cher's former stepbrother, whom she dislikes at first. They argue often. As the story continues, Josh becomes kinder and more thoughtful toward Cher. In the book, Mr. Knightley is Emma's only critic and is her sister's husband's brother. Eventually, both Cher/Emma and Josh/Mr. Knightley realize they are in love.
- Tai Frasier/Harriet Smith: Tai is like Harriet Smith, a young, shy girl who is new to school. Cher and Dionne help Tai become popular, which makes Cher upset. At first, Tai is interested in Travis, a quiet student who skates and smokes. Harriet is interested in Robert Martin, a humble farmer. Both are encouraged by Cher/Emma to avoid their lower-status love interests and instead pursue Elton/Mr. Elton. This causes problems when Tai falls for Josh and Harriet falls for Mr. Knightley, making Cher/Emma examine her own feelings.
- Mel Horowitz/Mr. Henry Woodhouse: Like Mr. Woodhouse, Mel is respected in his community. However, Mel does not care about his health, while Mr. Woodhouse is always worried about his health. Both love their daughters deeply but do not always express their feelings openly.
- Christian Stovitz/Frank Churchill: Christian is a love interest for Cher, similar to Frank Churchill in the book. In the book, Frank is already engaged, while in the movie, Christian is not available because he is gay. Both flirt with the heroine and make her think about her feelings.
- Travis Birkenstock/Robert Martin: Travis is a student who skates and smokes. He has a crush on Tai, but Cher tries to pair Tai with Elton, which causes problems. Travis is not a good student and often arrives late to class. In the book, Emma thinks Robert Martin, a farmer, is not suitable for Harriet.
- Elton Tiscia/Mr. Elton: Elton is a popular student who Cher tries to pair with Tai. Like Mr. Elton in the book, he is not interested in Tai/Harriet and mistakenly thinks Cher/Emma is interested in him.
- Amber Mariens/Mrs. Elton: Amber is the main antagonist in the movie. She is suggested to be in a relationship with Elton after Cher refuses his advances, similar to Mr. Elton marrying after Emma rejects him.
- Miss Geist/Miss Taylor and Mr. Hall/Mr. Weston: These are the first people Cher/Emma tries to match in the movie/book.

Clueless was the main inspiration for Australian rapper Iggy Azalea's music video for her 2014 song "Fancy," featuring Charli XCX. Many scenes and costumes from the film were used in the video, which included remakes of Clueless moments. The outfits were updated to reflect the film's style with a modern twist. "Fancy" was filmed at the same Los Angeles high school where Clueless was shot. A June 2018 episode of Lip Sync Battle featured Silverstone miming to "Fancy" while wearing Cher's yellow plaid skirt suit.
A scene from Clueless was referenced in the music video for Simone Battle's "He Likes Boys" (2011).
In the second episode of the second season of the BBC America series Killing Eve, titled "Nice and Neat" (2019), the Russian assassin Villanelle uses the codename "Cher Horowitz" to secretly inform her boss she is in trouble and needs help after being kidnapped.
