Early life and education

Ryan studied journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She helped write for nonprofit groups and wrote nonfiction books for others before starting to write fiction stories.

Career

Ryan writes romance novels set in today's world, known for showing deep feelings and important social issues.

The "Hoops" series looks at the lives of professional basketball players. The "All the King's Men" series was bought by The Traveling Picture Show Company (TPSC).

In 2019, Ryan became the first Black author to win the RITA Award from the Romance Writers of America for Best Contemporary Romance for her book Long Shot. This award is one of the most respected honors in the romance writing field. The story was inspired by events involving football player Ray Rice.

In 2023, her popular book Before I Let Go was being developed into a show by Peacock, which works with UCP and Universal Television.

Personal life

Ryan is also known for her efforts to raise awareness about autism, inspired by her experiences as a parent. She has mentioned that Shonda Rhimes influenced her writing.
