The Bride Test is a 2019 romance novel written by Helen Hoang. It is a companion novel to The Kiss Quotient. The story follows Esme Tran, a young Vietnamese woman who works as a hotel maid in Ho Chi Minh City. Her life changes when a wealthy Vietnamese-American woman offers her a chance to travel to the United States for the summer. She will live with the woman’s son, Khai Diep, and consider the possibility of marriage.
Khai is the autistic cousin of Michael, the main character from The Kiss Quotient. He is shy and believes he cannot experience love. As Esme adjusts to life in the United States, she learns about American culture and faces her own fears. She also helps Khai understand the world around him and challenges his beliefs.
Hoang wrote the book to challenge unfair ideas about autism. Khai, the main character, is seen by others as cold and unkind, but this is not true. The story is also inspired by Hoang’s mother’s experience as an immigrant. Esme’s journey reflects conversations Hoang had about growing up poor in Vietnam and moving to the United States. Hoang describes The Bride Test as a mix of the movies Green Card and Four Weddings and a Funeral, but with an autistic main character.
The book received positive reviews from Publishers Weekly and Kirkus Reviews.
