Signet Books was a part of New American Library (NAL), which became an independent American publishing house after separating from its British parent company, Penguin Books. Signet published the longest-running Regency series, starting in the late 1970s and ending in February 2006. It usually published three books each month, though the number sometimes changed over time.

Authors such as Mary Balogh, Catherine Coulter, and Amanda Scott began their writing careers with this series. Each book averaged about 220 pages, with longer romances labeled as Super Regency. Starting in 1989, a collection of four novellas was published during special times of the year, including Christmas anthologies (1989–1998), Valentine anthologies (1996–2005), and Summer anthologies (1992–1995).
