A romantic thriller is a story that mixes romance and thriller elements. The purpose of romantic thrillers is to entertain by creating unease through suspenseful moments and feelings of fear and worry. Although thrillers are well-known, they often mix with other genres.
Thrillers can be found in many types, like comedy, adventure, and romance, and they usually mix different genres. The suspense that defines thrillers works best with genres like crime, science fiction, and romance, which allow more suspense than genres like comedies or musicals.
A romantic thriller combines romance and thriller, making it different from other film styles like Gothic horror or old detective movies. This genre has two parts: 1) a main theme is created, and 2) relationships and patterns are added to that theme. This allows many different ways to tell the story and use visual styles.
History
Northrop Frye’s Anatomy of Criticism (1957) describes four main types of stories in literature: comedy, romance, tragedy, and irony or satire. In a romance, the main character is slightly better than others and can perform extraordinary actions in a world where natural rules are not fully followed.
A key part of a romance story is adventure, often involving a journey where the hero faces dangers or strange creatures. These stories usually show two different worlds: the normal, everyday world and a mysterious, unknown place. The idea of a maze is often used in romantic thrillers to represent a difficult journey filled with confusing choices and hidden dangers.
In the 1935 book The Thirty-Nine Steps, the main character, Richard Hannay, meets a mysterious woman at a theater and begins a romantic adventure involving spies and secret agents. Author John Buchan created the spy thriller genre, combining romance and adventure with political conflicts. In the movie version by Alfred Hitchcock, the possibility of a romantic relationship between the woman and the hero was not the main focus of the story.
Based on Raymond Chandler’s first detective novel, The Big Sleep (1946), the film features Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, and Martha Vickers. The story includes two important parts of a romantic thriller: adventure and two separate worlds. The main characters work together to save Bacall’s younger sister. The story centers on a detective solving a mystery, with characters moving between working together and being apart. A common theme is that the characters come from different social classes, which usually stops them from being close. Their romance seems impossible, but as the adventure continues, their relationship faces challenges and lies, eventually overcoming distrust. The story follows a private detective hired by a rich family to solve a case involving murder and blackmail, while possibly falling in love. Chandler’s character, Marlowe, is often described as a brave detective helping a woman in need.
Movie versions of Chandler’s books changed over time, with different directors and producers showing different sides of the character, similar to how James Bond is portrayed in different films. While Marlowe had quick, tense conversations with sexual tension, Bond used physical charm to attract others.
In the 2020s, romantic thrillers have become popular again, especially through Netflix. Examples include Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2022), starring Emma Corrin, and Dark Desire (2020), starring Maite Perroni. Other popular Netflix films include Obsession, 365 Days, Elite, and You. Outside of Netflix, movies like Tooth Pari: When Love Bites (2023) and Love Lies Bleeding (2024) also explore this genre.
