Inés of My Soul (Spanish: Inés del alma mía, 2006) is a historical novel written by Isabel Allende, a Chilean author. The book is about an older woman named Inés Suárez, who writes a story about her own life. She tells about her relationship with Pedro de Valdivia and the difficulties they faced while helping to conquer Chile and build the city of Santiago.
Plot
This historical novel shares key events from the life of Inés, an important person in Chile's history. It is written from the perspective of an older Inés, speaking directly to her adoptive daughter, Isabel.
In the first chapter, "Europe, 1500-1537," Inés describes her life in Plasencia, Spain, including her marriage and a relationship with Juan of Málaga. She also recounts her difficult journey to America, which was driven by her desire to find her husband and seek freedom.
In "America, 1537-1540," Inés explains her experiences in Cuzco, where she witnesses the decline of the Incan Empire under Francisco Pizarro and the political challenges faced during that time. She also begins a connection with Pedro de Valdivia, who becomes determined to conquer Chile after hearing stories from Diego de Almagro.
In the chapters "Trip to Chile, 1540-1541" and "Santiago of the New Extremadura, 1541-1543," Inés discusses the difficult process of conquering Chile, her life with Pedro de Valdivia, and how they worked together to establish the country's capital.
"The Tragic Years, 1543-1549" focus on the early struggles of Santiago as a city and Inés's marriage to Rodrigo de Quiroga, which happened after Pedro de Valdivia left on a trip to Peru to find more soldiers and settlers.
In the final chapter, Inés describes the beginning of the War of Chile, which occurred between Spanish forces and the Mapuche people under the leadership of Lautaro and Caupolicán.
Dramatic structure
This work is based on facts that are recorded in history. However, the author makes changes to some historical details, which allows her to include made-up parts. Allende uses beautiful and romantic words to describe the world of the book, which helps to draw readers into the story.
Characters
In the book, Isabel Allende portrays Mrs. Inés as a brave woman who works hard to support the man she loves while also standing firm in her sense of honor and her desire to claim new lands.
