"Book Lovers" is a 2022 romance novel written by Emily Henry. On March 28, 2023, Tango Entertainment purchased the rights to create a film adaptation, and Sarah Heyward was hired to write the script.
Plot
Nora Stephens, a literary agent from New York, agrees to spend August in Sunshine Falls, North Carolina, on vacation after being persuaded by her younger sister, Libby. Nora and Libby were raised by their mother, who passed away when Libby was in high school. Throughout her adult life, Nora has prioritized supporting Libby, giving up many personal opportunities to do so.
During her stay, Nora learns that Charlie Lastra, a book editor she has not had a good relationship with, is also in Sunshine Falls. Charlie, who owns and runs the local bookstore with his parents, is helping them manage the business. While in town, Nora and Charlie work together to edit a book written by one of Nora’s clients, Dusty Fielding. Charlie helps Nora secure a job as a book editor, a career she once dreamed of pursuing. Nora and Charlie develop feelings for each other, but Charlie explains that he must remain in Sunshine Falls to support his family, as his father is unwell. A long-distance relationship becomes too difficult for Nora.
Meanwhile, Libby tells Nora that she truly wants to move to Sunshine Falls and that the original goal of the trip was to convince Nora to do the same. However, Libby later encourages Nora to follow her dream of becoming a book editor in New York, not wanting Nora to continue making sacrifices for her.
After returning to New York, Nora continues her work. Months later, Charlie reveals that his father is recovering and that Libby has agreed to manage the bookstore. The story ends with Charlie preparing to propose to Nora after moving to New York.
Reception
The book Book Lovers received praise from critics, including special reviews from Booklist and Kirkus Reviews. Kirkus described the novel as "a heartfelt and hilarious read about books, sisters, and writing your own love story," while Publishers Weekly called it "a moving examination of love, belonging, and family."
Shelf Awareness’s Kerry McHugh noted that Book Lovers uses classic romance ideas in a meaningful way, creating a satisfying story while also exploring why romance novels are appealing. McHugh said the book addresses themes like family, mental health, and the power of books to heal and reveal. She concluded that Book Lovers is "a smart, charming, and dazzling book."
Carole V. Bell, writing for NPR, mentioned that the novel both uses and challenges common romance story elements. She said the story is complex and shows characters facing difficult family situations. The book explores ideas like the busy city woman who neglects her family and the value of small-town life, offering a thoughtful and funny look at love, family, and independence.
The Associated Press’s Alicia Rancilio observed that while Book Lovers includes the idea of a city person falling in love in a small town, it also questions and rethinks this story.
Natalie Zutter, writing for Paste, said Book Lovers continues a trend in modern romance stories where the love story is not the only focus. She noted that the book’s ending balances genre expectations with surprising moments.
Reviewers also discussed the characters. Booklist’s Keira Soleore described Nora as "scary, precise, and organized" and Charlie as having "a reputation for being brusque, brooding, and sharp with comments." Both characters are hardworking city people who value each other’s strengths but struggle with insecurities. Publishers Weekly praised the author’s ability to create characters that readers can relate to. Kirkus highlighted that while the romance between Nora and Charlie is strong, Nora’s relationship with her sister Libby is especially emotional.
Reviewers also noted the book’s humor. Alicia Rancilio, from the Associated Press, called Book Lovers "a romance fueled by quick banter" and said the author is skilled at creating witty dialogue. Kirkus also called the book "hilarious."
The audiobook version, narrated by Julia Whelan, received a special review from Booklist. Candace Smith said Whelan’s performance brought the characters to life, especially Charlie’s deep voice and Nora’s sharp tone. The audiobook was described as a joyful and exciting experience.
