Asuna Yuuki is a character from the Sword Art Online series of light novels written by Reki Kawahara. She is often called simply Asuna, which is the name she uses in the video game that the novels are based on. In the story, Asuna is the love interest of Kirito. She is also the main female character and a leader of a group called the Knights of the Blood Oath, which is known as the strongest guild in the game world of Aincrad. Asuna is shown as a highly skilled player, earning her the nickname "Flash." Her abilities and appearance make her well-known among other players.

Asuna and Kirito are widely recognized characters in anime and manga communities, often listed among the most popular characters. She has also appeared in many official Sword Art Online products. Asuna's character has received mixed to mostly positive feedback from critics, who highlight her relationship with Kirito, her appearance, and her role in the series.

Creation and conception

In an interview with the creator of the series, Reki Kawahara, the author explained that the female characters in Sword Art Online were not based on people he knew in real life. He said, "I usually do not create characters or settings before I start writing. As I write the story, the characters develop into who they are. I am not entirely sure how, but my hidden ideas or emotions help shape them into strong and capable individuals." Kawahara also mentioned that he wrote the series to show that online gaming is not a problem in society or a way to avoid real life. He wanted to present gaming in a more positive way in his books.

In another interview with Anime News Network, interviewer Lynzee Loveridge described Asuna as a "very strong and capable female character," comparing her to Genji's mother from The Tale of Genji. Kawahara agreed with this comparison.

At Sakura-Con 2013, Kawahara said, "I may have created Asuna too perfectly for Sword Art Online. When paired with Kirito, there were hardly any challenges the two could not overcome," when asked if Asuna was a difficult character to develop. In an interview with Haruka Tomatsu, Asuna's voice actor, she said, "Rather than being similar to her, I see Asuna as someone I would like to become. She can cook, she is smart, and I admire her. Even though I may not cook well, I enjoy cooking. I am not sure if that makes us alike, but I truly like her."

Lambent Light (ランベントライト, Ranbento Raito) is Asuna's signature one-handed rapier. She used it as her main weapon until the important battle on the 75th Floor. Kirito used this rapier to defeat Heathcliff in the final battle, ending the game. Her rapier, combined with her speed, earned her the nickname "Lightning Flash."

Appearances

Asuna is the main character in Sword Art Online and the main character in the seventh volume and the Progressive series, which tells the story of the Aincrad Arc from her perspective. She is 17 years old and is friends with Kirito, who later becomes her in-game husband in Sword Art Online and Alfheim Online. Asuna is a leader in a group called the Knights of the Blood Oath, which is known as one of the strongest groups in the game Sword Art Online. She is one of the few female players in the game and is well-known for her fast skills with a rapier, earning her the nickname "the Flash." She later falls in love with Kirito and marries him in the game after saving him from a dangerous situation. At the end of the Sword Art Online story, she sacrifices her in-game life to save Kirito from an enemy. However, this was only in the game, and she is later reunited with Kirito in real life after the enemy is defeated.

After finishing the Sword Art Online story, Asuna remains unconscious in another virtual reality called Alfheim Online. She is forced to play the role of Titania, the Queen of Fairies, while a man named Nobuyuki Sugou plays the role of Oberon, the Fairy King. This is part of a plan by Sugou to marry Asuna in real life and take control of a company. Asuna tries to escape her prison, the World Tree, and steals a special item called a GM card. However, she is caught and sent back after guards confirm she is the captive. When she hears a voice from Yui, she drops the GM card. After being freed, she creates two characters in Alfheim Online: Asuna, who is a healer, and Erika, who is a fighter. She continues living with Kirito in real life and enrolls in a school for Sword Art Online survivors. In real life, Asuna’s parents want her to follow their career path, but after her experiences in the game and meeting Kirito, she chooses a different future. She officially becomes Kirito’s real-life girlfriend and hopes to marry him and have a family.

Asuna is also a major character in Alicization. After Kirito goes missing following an attack, Asuna learns about the Ocean Turtle and asks for help from Rinko Koujiro, who helps her join the project and convinces another person to let her stay. When enemies attack the Ocean Turtle, Asuna logs into the Underworld using a special account called the Goddess of Creation, Stacia.

In Sword Art Online Abridged, a shortened and reimagined version of the original anime by an American animation studio called Something Witty Entertainment, Asuna is voiced by Carrie Johnston. This version includes new storylines, such as Asuna being a new player when she first joins Sword Art Online and more details about her relationship with Kirito and her escape from Sugou.

Reception

Asuna feels more comfortable in the recreated Sword Art Online world than in the real world. For two years in the online world, she was a warrior who made her own choices and helped others fight for freedom. In the real world, she comes from a wealthy and important family with many CEOs and politicians. Because of this, she is expected to attend top schools, earn high grades, get a respected job, and marry someone influential in high society. Her life has been planned since birth, leaving no room for spending time with friends in an online game, attending a non-top-tier school, or loving a normal boy. Asuna struggles with who she is and who she wants to be as she faces challenges with her strict and unkind mother at home.

In a review, Richard Eisenbeis of Kotaku praised Sword Art Online as one of the smartest series in recent years. He highlighted how the relationship between Kirito and Asuna shows what love is like in a virtual world. However, some critics later said that in the second part of the story, Asuna became a helpless character, similar to a traditional "damsel in distress." They argued that her strength was reduced to being a goal for Kirito to rescue. Eisenbeis noted that in the first part of the series, Asuna was a strong leader who helped others survive a deadly game. In the second part, she was trapped and powerless, waiting for Kirito to save her. In later parts, she was only a background character.

Karen Mead of Japanator.com disagreed, explaining that Asuna’s actions were key to her rescue. She pointed out that if Asuna had not escaped her prison and explored on her own, Kirito would not have found the item needed to save her. This means Asuna was not truly a helpless character, even though some critics still believed she was. The idea that Kirito was overly perfect was also challenged, as his relationship with Asuna showed his flaws. Eisenbeis praised the fourth part of the series for focusing on Asuna’s perspective, calling it an "excellent choice" because it allowed her to grow again after being weakened in the second part. He described the arc as both "heartbreaking and beautiful."

Asuna is one of the most popular characters in Sword Art Online. In a fan poll by Charapedia, 10,000 people voted for their favorite anime couples, with Asuna and Kirito winning. Kirito’s confession to Asuna ranked third in a list of top "anime and manga love confessions." In another poll, Asuna was second in a list of "cool" female anime characters. She also ranked third in a list of characters fans would not want to provoke and 26th in a list of characters people would want to work for. In a poll asking which anime characters fans would name their children after, Asuna was first, and Kirito was fourth. A Chinese website, Bilibili, held a poll for the most "moe" (cute) characters of 2015, with Asuna winning third place for female characters and Kirito in the top eight for males. In a poll by Dengeki Bunko, the publisher of Sword Art Online, Asuna and Kirito were first and second, respectively. Kirito and Asuna were listed in a poll by Anime News Network as "Top 7 Couples Who Make Love and War," as they fought together and married before facing the game’s creator. A Japanese app, Otamart, asked users to rank characters who look best in swimsuits and traditional clothing, with Asuna placing 13th for swimsuits and 15th for traditional outfits. In another Otamart poll, Asuna ranked 10th for characters men would want to give chocolates to and 10th for characters men would want to receive chocolates from on Valentine’s Day. In a 2014 Newtype poll, Asuna ranked fourth among female characters, and Kirito ranked first among male characters. Asuna was also listed as the eighth "Top 25 Hottest Anime Babes" of 2013. Asuna has been featured in many promotional efforts and merchandise. This includes swimsuit figures of Asuna and another character, Leafa. A "cooking version" figurine of Asuna was released in 2016. She also appears in advertisements for a snack called Umaibo by Namco. An app called "Wake Me Up Asuna" was released in 2015, allowing users to receive information like weather updates and reminders from Asuna in different outfits. The app is free, but users must pay for English voice recognition and subtitles.

Merchandise featuring Sword Art Online characters, including Asuna, has been sold in lotteries by Bandai. Anime News Network joked that the characters have earned a lot of money for the franchise’s creators. Replicas of Asuna’s "Wind Fleuret" sword and Kirito’s "Elucidator" sword have been made. Perfumes based on the characters are also available, with Asuna’s scent described as "a sweet, irresistibly refreshing scent of galbanum and jasmine." Glasses inspired by the characters include a "Fairy Dance Asuna" model with pink frames and red ribbons. Earphone jack figures of Asuna, Leafa, and others are also available. Asuna has appeared in several Sword Art Online-related video games, including Dengeki Bunko: Fighting Climax. She, Kirito, and Leafa were part of a campaign to stop anime and manga piracy. 3D light-up LED models of Kirito, Asuna, and other characters are also sold.
