An Offer from a Gentleman is a 2001 romance novel written by Julia Quinn. It is the third book in her Bridgerton series, which follows the Bridgerton family. The story focuses on Benedict, the second child and second son of the family. Unlike other books in the series, this novel is inspired by a fairy tale, specifically Cinderella. A deluxe collector's edition of the book was released on November 25, 2025. The book was also adapted into the fourth season of the Netflix series Bridgerton, which premiered on January 29, 2026.
Plot
Sophia "Sophie" Beckett is the child born out of wedlock to the late Richard Gunningworth, Earl of Penwood. She works as a maid in the home of her stepmother, Araminta Gunningworth, Countess of Penwood, and her two step-sisters, Rosamund and Posy Reiling. Sophie was raised as the Earl's "ward" and received an education until his death when she was 14 years old. In his will, the Earl required Araminta to triple her annual allowance if she cared for Sophie until she turned 20. Araminta agreed reluctantly, making Sophie an unpaid maid.
In 1815, Sophie is 20 years old and helps her stepmother and step-sisters prepare for a Bridgerton family masquerade ball. After the guests leave, the other servants help Sophie dress to attend the ball, but she must leave by midnight.
Benedict Bridgerton, the second son of the Bridgerton family, is a well-known bachelor in society. He dislikes being judged for his family name rather than his own qualities. At the masquerade ball, he meets Sophie and is surprised by her uniqueness. Sophie recognizes him through descriptions in the gossip publication Lady Whistledown's Society Papers. They dance and share a kiss on the home's private terrace. Before midnight, he removes one of her gloves, which bears the Penwood family crest. He visits the Penwood family but is disappointed to learn that Rosamund and Posy are not "the lady in silver." Araminta realizes Benedict was searching for Sophie, who had secretly attended the ball. Sophie is forced to leave and takes a pair of Araminta's shoe clips before departing London to find work elsewhere.
Two years later, Benedict has nearly given up on finding "the lady in silver." At a country party, he stops three men from harming a maid, Sophie, and does not recognize her. He drives her to his estate, "My Cottage," and promises to help her find new work. A rainstorm makes him sick, and Sophie cares for him. During his recovery, she is treated as a guest, and they grow closer. He asks her to be his mistress, but she refuses, explaining the challenges of being the child of a nobleman without a father's name. He pressures her to work for his mother in London, and they travel there together. Sophie continues to claim she is well-educated, even though she was not.
At Araminta's home, Sophie had done the work of three maids. To replace her, Araminta started a "housemaid war" by hiring staff from other families, including one from the Bridgertons. Sophie becomes a lady's maid for Benedict's sisters at Lady Bridgerton's home. The Bridgerton ladies include Sophie in their afternoon teas. Benedict visits often, and they become close, but Sophie still refuses to be his mistress, explaining she does not want to have an illegitimate child.
Two weeks later, Sophie mentions during tea that Benedict is an artist, a fact the Bridgerton ladies did not know. Penelope Bridgerton nearly recognizes Sophie from the masquerade ball. She overhears Colin Bridgerton telling his brothers he would never marry her. Benedict asks his mother about being with someone society might disapprove of, and she says she will support him, though he may face rejection. He finds Sophie wearing a blindfold while playing with children and realizes she is "the lady in silver." He confronts her, and she reveals she is the Earl's illegitimate child.
Sophie resigns from the Bridgertons' household. On the street, she is arrested by Araminta for stealing. Benedict searches for her and, with help from Lady Whistledown, finds Araminta taunting Sophie in prison. Posy admits to stealing the shoe clips and reveals Araminta had stolen the dowry the Earl left for Sophie. Violet Bridgerton uses this information to force Araminta to legally recognize Sophie as a Penwood cousin and invites Posy to live with the Bridgertons. Sophie returns to Benedict. In the end, Sophie and Benedict have been married for seven years, live happily at "My Cottage," and are expecting their fourth child.
