Background

A Night to Surrender is the first book in Tessa Dare's Spindle Cove series. It is a Regency-era romance novel published on August 30, 2011, by Avon. Avon chose the book to join its "K.I.S.S. and Teal" program, which gives 25 cents to the Ovarian Cancer National Alliance for every copy of the novel sold.

Plot summary

The novel takes place during the Regency era in a faraway seaside town called Spindle Cove. A local woman named Susanna Finch has created a place where young women who do not fit into society can live freely. Men are usually not allowed in this area so the women can be themselves.

Their peaceful place is disturbed when the novel's main character, Lieutenant Colonel Victor "Bram" Bramwell, arrives. As the new Earl of Rycliff, Bram inherited an old, run-down castle near the village. Because rumors spread that Napoleon might attack England, Bram was told to go to Spindle Cove and form a group of men to protect the area. This task is important to Bram because he was hurt in battle and wants to show he can lead again.

Susanna strongly disagrees with changes to how the town operates, leading to a mental challenge or argument between her and Bram.

Reception

The novel earned a starred review from Publishers Weekly, which praised the book's "unique and lovable characters" and its "clever conversations that show important truths in a natural way." The Washington Post featured the book as one of Sarah MacLean's favorite beach reads, calling it "both charming and exciting."

Romantic Times gave the book its 2011 Historical Love and Laughter award. It also received the 2012 RITA Award for Best Regency Historical.
