The Violin Sonata No. 5 in F major, Op. 24, is a musical piece for violin and piano written by Ludwig van Beethoven. It was first released in 1801. This work is often called the Spring Sonata (Frühlingssonate), though the name "Spring" was added after Beethoven’s death. The sonata was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries, a supporter who also received dedications from Beethoven for two other works from the same year: the String Quintet in C major, Op. 29, and the Violin Sonata No. 4. Additionally, Count Moritz von Fries was honored in Beethoven’s later Symphony No. 7 in A major. The original handwritten version of the sonata is stored in the Austrian National Library.

Origin

Beethoven planned to pair this work with his Violin Sonata No. 4, Opus 23. The two sonatas match in musical key and style. However, they were not published together, so they have different opus numbers. The reason for this separation is unknown.
