A romantic thriller is a type of story that mixes elements from the romance and thriller genres. These stories aim to entertain by creating moments of suspense that make audiences feel uneasy or anxious. While the idea of a thriller is well known, these stories often combine ideas from different types of stories.
Thrillers can be found in many forms, such as comedy, melodrama, adventure, and romance. All thrillers usually mix different genres. The suspense that makes thrillers exciting works best when combined with genres like crime, science fiction, or romance. Genres such as screwball comedies or musicals are less likely to create the same level of suspense.
A romantic thriller combines romance and thriller elements, making it different from other film styles like Gothic horror or Golden Age detective films. This genre has two parts: 1) a specific theme is introduced, and 2) relationships, patterns, and how the story is structured are connected to this theme. This setup allows for many different ways to tell a story within the romantic thriller genre.
History
Northrop Frye’s Anatomy of Criticism (1957) introduced four basic categories in literature: comedy, romance, tragedy, and irony or satire. In a romance, the main character is slightly more capable than others and performs extraordinary actions in a world where natural rules are slightly changed.
A key part of a romantic story is adventure, often involving a quest where the hero faces obstacles or dangerous creatures. These stories usually show two different worlds: the everyday world and a mysterious, unknown place. The idea of a maze is often used in romantic thrillers to represent a confusing journey with hidden dangers and tricky choices.
In The Thirty-Nine Steps (1935), the main character, Richard Hannay, meets a mysterious woman at a theater and joins her on an adventure involving spies and secret agents. Author John Buchan created the spy thriller genre, combining romance and adventure with political conflicts. In Alfred Hitchcock’s movie version, the romance between the woman and the hero was not the main focus, but the story’s mystery and danger were.
Based on Raymond Chandler’s first novel, The Big Sleep (1946), the film stars Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, and Martha Vickers. It shows two main parts of a romantic thriller: adventure and two separate worlds. The story follows a detective trying to save Bacall’s younger sister. The plot centers on solving a murder case, with characters working together and apart. A common theme in this genre is that the characters come from different social classes, which makes their relationship difficult. Their romance seems impossible, but as the adventure continues, they face challenges and learn the truth. The story involves a detective hired by a rich family to solve a complex case involving murder and blackmail, while also dealing with a possible love story. Chandler’s character, Marlowe, is often described as a brave detective helping someone in need.
Movie versions of Chandler’s books have changed over time, with different directors showing different sides of the character, similar to how James Bond is portrayed in different films. While Marlowe has quick, witty conversations with sexual tension, Bond uses physical charm to attract others.
In the 2020s, romantic thrillers have become more popular again, especially on Netflix. Examples include Lady Chatterley’s Lover (2022), starring Emma Corrin, and Dark Desire (2020), starring Maite Perroni. Other popular Netflix shows include Obsession, 365 Days, Elite, and You. Outside of Netflix, films like Tooth Pari: When Love Bites (2023) and Love Lies Bleeding (2024) also explore this genre.
