Writing and production

Bruno Mars said, "It took me months to create 'Just the Way You Are.' I wasn’t trying to write something deep or poetic. I was telling a story. Get ready to fall in love!" The song was inspired by Eric Clapton’s "Wonderful Tonight" (1977) and Sinéad O'Connor’s "Nothing Compares 2 U" (1990). Mars explained, "I love songs like Joe Cocker’s 'You Are So Beautiful' and Clapton’s 'Wonderful Tonight'—songs that are simple and heartfelt. They don’t use complicated words or stories. They come directly from the heart. 'Just the Way You Are' is one of those songs. I’m just telling a woman she looks beautiful the way she is. What woman doesn’t want to hear that?"

Bruno Mars’s A&R, Aaron Bay-Schuck, helped connect him with the original idea from American producers and songwriters Khalil Walton and Needlz. Mars first sang the hook that Khalil and Needlz wrote for a song on Lupe Fiasco’s album. Needlz allowed Mars to use the idea for his own album. This was made possible by Bay-Schuck, who told HitQuarters, "As soon as 'Just the Way You Are' was finished, we knew it would be the first single."

Ari Levine explained, "Needlz had a track with a melody idea from Khalil Walton, which was shared with us by an A&R person. Bruno and Phil created the chorus. Needlz sent us the files, and we replaced some sounds with our own. I programmed drums on the MPC, and we finished the rest of the song. I never met Needlz or Walton." The song was offered to Lupe Fiasco and CeeLo Green, but Mars decided to keep it.

"Just the Way You Are" was written by Bruno Mars, Philip Lawrence, Ari Levine, Khalil Walton, and Needlz. The Smeezingtons and Needlz handled the production. Levine and Mars played all the instruments. Levine engineered the song at Levcon Studios in California. The track was mixed at Larrabee Sound Studios in Los Angeles by Manny Marroquin, with Christian Plata and Erik Madrid as mixing assistants. It was mastered by Stephen Marcussen at Marcussen Mastering in Hollywood, California.

Composition and lyrical interpretation

"Just the Way You Are" is a pop, R&B, and soft rock ballad. The song uses a soft-sounding piano and a drumbeat style from hip-hop music. Tim Byron from The Vine.com noted that the melody in the chorus starts with rising notes that create tension, which is then eased by the simple and catchy chorus line. Billboard said that Bruno Mars "takes his dreamy soprano to the next level" on the track. The song is in the key of F major and follows the chord progression of F, D minor, B flat, and back to F. Mars's vocal range spans from F3 to C5.

Billboard called the song "a feel-good jam." Leah Greenblatt from Entertainment Weekly described it as a "sweetly smitten ballad." Brad Wete, writing for the same publication, called the track "an endearing mid-tempo" and said its "vibe" is similar to Bruno Mars's collaboration with B.o.B, but "not as groovy." Nick Levine from Digital Spy described it as a "huge-hearted urban piano ballad," comparing it to "Empire State of Mind" (2009). The song has been compared to a "U2 production" by Jon Caramanica of The New York Times, and Andy Gill said it has a "groove through R&B territory." Tim Sendra of AllMusic called the debut single "lushly romantic." Scott Kara from the New Zealand Herald called it a "ballad boogie."

Lyrically, the song is about Bruno Mars expressing love for a beautiful girl who is always on his mind. The verses include lines like, "When you smile, the whole world stops and stares for a while / 'Cause girl you're amazing, just the way you are." Billboard said that Mars writes lyrics to make female listeners feel "nothing short of perfect in their own skin." Byron said the lyrics are "effective" because the repeated lines at the start of the verses are catchy. Alex Young from Consequence of Sound said the song stays true to its name, showing that Mars would not change anything about the girl he loves. Lester said the lyrics are about a girl Mars would "kiss all day."

Reception and accolades

The song received different opinions from music critics. Nick Levine from Digital Spy gave it four out of five stars and called it a "heartfelt urban piano ballad […] with a similar, if not quite as strong, classic feel to 'Empire State of Mind' by Jay-Z featuring Alicia Keys." Billboard said the song has a steady, danceable rhythm and a catchy chorus, which could help Mars become a successful solo artist. Alex Young from Consequence of Sound praised the chorus for being "very catchy" and said the song could become a popular radio hit. Tim Sendra from AllMusic gave a mixed review, saying the song is not deep or poetic but is "sweetly played and sung." He believes it will "touch hearts of people of all ages." Tony Clayton-Lea from The Irish Times called the song "a bright, cheerful pop song that makes people smile."

However, Tim Byron from The Vine compared "Just the Way You Are" to Billy Joel's 1977 song of the same name, saying the older version is "more thoughtful about the challenges in relationships." Jamie Milton from musicOMH noted that the song's rhythm makes it sound like a pop song, but it is one of the "most emotional ballads" in recent years. Nima Baniamer from Contactmusic.com said the song does not make Mars stand out from other R&B artists. He added that the song lacks a strong ending and feels "corny and cheesy." Paul Lester from The Guardian described Mars's singing voice as "light and unremarkable."

The song was nominated for the 2010 Record of the Year award. In 2011, it won the Grammy Award for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance. It was also nominated for several Billboard Music Awards in 2011, including Top Hot 100 Song and Top Pop Song, but only won Top Radio Song. The song was nominated for Choice Music: Love Song at the 2011 Teen Choice Awards. In 2011, it was one of the winners for Most Performed Songs at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards. In 2012, it won Most Performed Songs and Song of the Year at the same awards. At the RTHK International Pop Poll Awards, the song won "Top 10 Gold International Gold Songs." Rolling Stone's Maya Georgi said the song started a new trend in pop music that celebrates body positivity. It also inspired Meghan Trainor's first single, "All About That Bass" (2014).

Music video

The music video was directed by Ethan Lander. It was filmed in September 2010 in downtown Los Angeles and released on September 8, 2010. Cameron Duddy filmed behind-the-scenes footage in exchange for his jacket, which Bruno Mars wore during the video. The video includes Peruvian-Australian actress Nathalie Kelley. Lander believes Bruno Mars is a star. He says, "The charisma he has, you cannot teach." He also notes, "The singer even manages to be suave in his mugshot, which is no small feat." Lander describes the video as a collaboration, where the director created the vision and Mars added his own ideas. The video combines live-action scenes with stop-motion animation. Through the animation, Bruno shows his girlfriend how beautiful she is. He uses a cassette tape to create images that come to life.

The video starts with Kelley listening to "Just the Way You Are" on her Walkman as Mars enters. Mars stops the tape player, removes the cassette, and begins singing. As the instrumental part of the song plays, Mars takes the tape and arranges it into letters spelling his name and the song title. Later, he forms images like a drum and a portrait of himself. Other animated images include Kelley blinking and smiling. A bell is animated to ring in time with the song's ending. The video ends with Mars singing and playing an upright piano while Kelley watches and smiles. The video was inspired by the artwork of Erika Iris Simmons.

At the 2011 MTV Video Music Aid Japan, the video won Best Male Video. In the same year, it won Favorite International Video at the Myx Music Awards and received three nominations at the MuchMusic Video Awards: International Video of the Year – Artist, Most Watched Video of the Year, and UR Fave International Video. It also won the Popular International Music Video award at the Channel [V] Thailand Music Video Awards. As of February 2024, the video has received over 1.9 billion views on YouTube.
