Plot
Nora Stephens, a literary agent from New York, agrees to spend August in Sunshine Falls, North Carolina, on a vacation suggested by her younger sister, Libby. Nora and Libby were raised by their mother, who passed away when Libby was in high school. Throughout her adult life, Nora has made many personal sacrifices to help support Libby.
While in Sunshine Falls, Nora learns that Charlie Lastra, a book editor with whom she has had disagreements, is also in town. Charlie, who is from Sunshine Falls, is managing his family’s local bookstore to help his parents.
During their time there, Nora and Charlie work together to edit a book written by one of Nora’s clients, Dusty Fielding. Charlie helps Nora secure an editorial job, a career she once dreamed of. Nora and Charlie develop feelings for each other, but Charlie chooses to stay in Sunshine Falls to care for his family, as his father is unwell. Nora finds it difficult to maintain a relationship with someone living far away.
Meanwhile, Libby tells Nora that she truly wants to move to Sunshine Falls. She originally planned the trip to encourage Nora to do the same. However, Libby later advises Nora to pursue her goal of becoming a book editor in New York, hoping Nora will not continue making sacrifices for her.
After returning to New York, Nora continues her work. A few months later, Charlie informs Nora that his father is recovering and that Libby has agreed to manage the bookstore. The story ends with Charlie preparing to ask Nora to marry him after moving to New York.
Reception
The book Book Lovers was praised by critics, including starred reviews from Booklist and Kirkus Reviews. Kirkus described the novel as "a touching and funny story about books, sisters, and writing your own love story." Publishers Weekly called it "a thoughtful look at love, belonging, and family."
Shelf Awareness’s Kerry McHugh noted that Book Lovers uses classic romance story ideas in a meaningful way, creating a satisfying romance while also exploring why romance novels are appealing. McHugh said the book highlights themes like family, mental health, and the healing power of books. She concluded that Book Lovers is "a clever, charming, and impressive book."
Carole V. Bell of NPR wrote that the novel both uses and challenges common romance story ideas. She said the story has many layers and shows characters facing difficult family situations. The book explores ideas like the busy city woman who neglects her family and the value of small-town life, offering a thoughtful and funny look at love, family, and independence.
The Associated Press’s Alicia Rancilio mentioned that while the book includes a familiar story of someone from the city falling in love in a small town, it also breaks down and reimagines this idea.
Natalie Zutter of Paste wrote that Book Lovers continues a trend in modern romance novels where the story is not only about love but also about other important themes. She noted that the book successfully balances the expectations of a happy ending with the reality that life is not always perfect.
Reviewers also focused on the characters. Booklist’s Keira Soleore described Nora as "scary, precise, and organized" and Charlie as "brusque, brooding, and sharp with comments." Both characters are hardworking city people who respect each other but struggle with insecurities. Publishers Weekly praised the author’s ability to create characters that readers can relate to. Kirkus highlighted that while the romance between Nora and Charlie is exciting, the bond between Nora and her sister Libby is especially emotional.
The book’s humor was also noted. Associated Press’s Alicia Rancilio called it "a romance filled with quick, witty conversations," and said the author is skilled at writing funny dialogue. Kirkus also called the book "hilarious."
The audiobook version, narrated by Julia Whelan, received a starred review from Booklist. Candace Smith wrote that Whelan skillfully voices Charlie’s deep, rough voice and Nora’s sarcastic tone. The audiobook is described as a joyful and exciting experience.
